A world of old debts, hard choices, and the people who carry both

The_Woodsman_Part_One_cover.png

Captain Ruthgardt has spent his life doing as he is told, and it has brought him to a forest clearing at night, listening to men from his own side do something unspeakable to a prisoner. When the bear comes, he is the only one it leaves alive. What follows is a man learning to eat, to burn, to bury, and to ask the one question the army never had time for. The forest takes no side. It never did. It simply goes on being a forest while men bleed into it. This one is a departure for me. My other work moves between people and places, and there is usually someone to talk to. Here there is one man, one forest, and almost nobody to hear him. It seemed the honest way to tell it. Readers of The Forest Asks already know how his story ends. This is how it began. Part One of three, unless Ruthgardt has other ideas. He usually does. Part Three follows in a fortnight. Sign up and it will come to you.

The woodsman Pt one and two

The World of Ashmarch

A grimdark low-fantasy realm where the weight of the past is heavier than the crown. The Ashmarch is a land of border towns, excommunicated inquisitors, and clansmen caught in the brutal crossfire of a corrupt kingdom and a religious order that answers to no one.

Tales from the Ashmarch

The Author

Hi all and thank you for taking the time to stop and read

I'm Richard Martin — a business owner, a husband, and a father.

I grew up in a family that believed in imagination and a good story. From an early age I lost myself in the lands of Middle-earth, and on rainy days I found solace with David Gemmell.

I've now taken the plunge and written my own book. The Ashmarch is the world I want to share with anyone who wants to read it.

My sincere hope is that I get the chance to be there on the rainy days for someone else.
